Georgia’s Phoebe Putney Hospital Standardizes on Ipswitch Network Management Software for Real-Time Network and Application Monitoring
Lexington, MA – May 22, 2008 – Ipswitch, Inc.’s Network Management division, the leading developer of network management software, announced today that Phoebe Putney Memorial Hospital (PPMH), a 450-bed teaching hospital in southwest Georgia, is using Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold Premium Edition for predictive network management and monitoring of critical IT infrastructure. PPMH is complying with HIPAA requirements and preventing unauthorized access to patient health information at the network level by using WhatsUp Gold to securely monitor its more than 1,000 networked devices and automatically alert network administrators when anomalies occur.
As healthcare organizations work to comply with HIPAA, network management software must provide absolute security for network connections so services and equipment are protected. In the case of PPMH, more than 21,000 admissions and more than 53,000 yearly visits to the emergency department are logged in their networked systems. Data for each activity needs to be protected as part of growing HIPAA regulations. To aid with HIPAA compliance, WhatsUp Gold is used to detect and prevent any malicious traffic including virus and worm outbreaks in order to keep the network secure. The software also gives PPMH a real-time look at the status of its network.
“Before we started to use Ipswitch we were very reactive in our approach,” said Michael Elder, director of technical services, PPMH. “WhatsUp gives us a real-time picture of what’s up and what’s down so we can manage our network proactively. We installed it with just our IT staff and we didn’t have to invest in additional head count to operate it. We love WhatsUp Gold.”
At PPMH, a hospital that has grown through regional acquisition, WhatsUp Gold has been instrumental in providing consistent, easy-to-administer management and monitoring interfaces to meet PPMH’s needs. To date, the hospital has 300 affiliated physicians, a staff of more than 3,500 and a second hospital facility 30 miles away. PPMH’s IT department is able to provide constant vigilance against emerging vulnerabilities, supply detailed reports for reviewing network behaviour and offer the highest level of protection at the industry’s lowest total cost of ownership.
