2nd Annual SysAdmin All-Star Winner Announced
LEXINGTON, Mass. ─ August 16, 2011 ─ Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division, developer of the WhatsUp Gold suite of innovative IT management solutions, today announced that James Attanasio from FPS Social Security in Belgium as the winner of its 2nd annual SysAdmin All-Star Award. The competition was open to all system administrators, who had to submit why they thought they should become the 2011 SysAdmin All-Star. The competition was run to coincide with the worldwide System Administrator Appreciation Day on Friday 29th July. Ipswitch awarded Attanasio an Apple iPad 2 as this year’s SysAdmin All-Star.
Attanasio has been the network administrator for FPS Social Security in Belgium for six years. Along with his team, Attanasio is in charge of the management of a large and disparate network infrastructure of 25 Cisco Routers, 55 Cisco Wifi Nodes, 60 Avaya switch stacks, two Nortel core switches and 80 Cisco Access Points.
“We use Ipswitch WhatsUp Gold to monitor both our headquarters in Brussels and our 19 remote sites spread all over Belgium 24 hours a day, seven days a week,” explained Attanasio. “Our reliance on WhatsUp Gold has increased in the past year, as we have been setting up a wireless and VoIP infrastructure to enable our staff the flexibility to work from anywhere in the building or remotely from a different location such as their home office.”
“Our VoIP system relies on multiple critical devices such as access points, routers, voice gateways and switches. We cannot afford any of those devices to go down, so we rely on Ipswitch’s WhatsUp Gold to warn us via email and SMS if anything is reaching a threshold of 90% utilisation and in danger of going down,” he added.
In addition to the new VoIP system, FPS Social Security in Belgium counts on WhatsUp Gold to monitor its substantial existing infrastructure, load on its firewall interfaces from some 300 users that connect daily. WhatsUp Gold also manages the installation and configuration of new equipment such as wireless access points, mVoIP and the deployment of mobile devices.
In keeping with the company’s desire to provide flexible working, Attanasio works from home for half the week. “I can view the WhatsUp Gold Dashboard from my iPhone and now from my iPad. I find it gives such a simple and quick view on the network status that it is not only used by myself and the core infrastructure team but also by our helpdesk operators on site.”
In June, Ipswitch Network Management Division launched WhatsUp Gold v15, a milestone release that marked the biggest changes to WhatsUp Gold in nearly a decade with significant enhancements and additions, making IT monitoring and management faster, simpler and more secure. WhatsUp Gold v15 delivers an optimal user experience and allows IT professionals to have complete protection and control over their IT environments.
“FPS Social Security in Belgium is dedicated to offering their staff a unique work/life balance and central to that vision is an innovative network designed to offer them the upmost flexibility,” said Ennio Carboni, president of Ipswitch Network Management Division “The depth that Attanasio uses WhatsUp Gold to ensure network uptime and availability – and ultimately happy, loyal staff – made him a worthy winner of the 2nd annual SysAdmin All-Star Award.”
