Ipswitch Warns of Networks Failing Under Weight of Christmas Shopping

More than half of IT administrators expect bandwidth use to increase by over one-fifth due to online shopping

LEXINGTON, MA ─ December 09, 2010  Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division, developer of the WhatsUp Gold suite of innovative IT management solutions today released the results of a survey of some of its 80,000 customers that showed that more than 50 percent of IT administrators expect to lose more than 20 percent of their company’s essential network bandwidth from employees shopping on the job. This follows the warning it made in July that global networks hit 95% capacity during key games in this year’s Fifa World Cup.

A recently published report from the Interactive Media in Retail Group (IMRG) claimed that total online spending in the UK for November and December is anticipated to be £12.4bn, a significant increase on 2009, as the UK ecommerce industry continues to go from strength to strength. A recent poll conducted by Ipswitch asked IT administrators how much network bandwidth they anticipated their company to lose from online shopping. Of those polled, one-third of respondents expected to lose more than 30 percent of its network bandwidth. Conversely, 28.5 percent, the next largest group, expected to lose less than 10 percent of their network resources to employees undertaking their Christmas shopping online. The smallest group of respondents, 17.6 percent, expected to lose between 10 and 20 percent of their network bandwidth.

“The trend of going online during working hours to purchase presents for friends and loved ones continues to grow,” said Ennio Carboni, president of Ipswitch Inc.’s Network Management Division. “However, convenience and big savings for consumers can translate to less network bandwidth and lost productivity for employers. Whilst we are sure many employers encourage a certain amount of festive spirit we expect more savvy organisations to track and calculate the impact of online shopping during December to make sure that their critical business operations have the bandwidth needed in the future to handle seasonal peaks of network usage.”
