Ipswitch Podcast Tackles Security throughout Software Development Lifecycle with Cyber Security Guru

Guest Joseph DePlato Explains How Incorporating Security into Software Development Lifecycle Doesn’t Have to Be Painful with Help from Automation

BURLINGTON, Mass. – April 18, 2019Ipswitch®, producer of award-winning and easy-to-use secure file transfer and network management software, hosted guest Joseph DePlato, CTO and Co-Founder of data security firm Bluestone Analytics for the episode, “What Is DevSecOps?” for Ipswitch’s podcast, Defrag This. DePlato is a professional hacker who has served as a senior cyber security consultant for various companies, including BP, American Express, Home Depot and Palantir. Launched and hosted by Greg Mooney, Defrag This features meaningful trends, commentary on breaking news and more, available on multiple channels.

When software teams originally grasped the idea of DevOps, security wasn't the first thing that came to mind, however, that's changing. In the last couples of years, we’ve seen a couple of massive breaches, including Equifax as well as some new compliance and policy frameworks, including the EU's GDPR, come on the scene.

Organizations were previously on the defensive, but security is now recognized to be just as important as other aspects of the software development process. That's why the DevSecOps was coined. There needed to be a way to harness the efficiency of an agile framework with information security in mind.

The help of automation is key, especially when software development needs to be continuous and quick. Change doesn't have to be painful for IT, security, or dev teams, however. With the right mind set and automation, more secure software and a more secure world can be achieved.

“Ideally, it's [security] a shared responsibility,” said DePlato. “I believe the main goal of any security team is to automate as much as they can, so that it can be integrated into the new development lifecycle.”
