What is Web Messaging?

Web Messaging lets your e-mail users to send and receive mail using a web browser. Users can log on to Web Messaging from any browser on any machine and perform all of their mail functions - without having to install e-mail client software or a browser plug-in on their local PC or workstation.

Web Messaging works like an IMAP4 mail client - all users' mail is stored on the mail server. When a user creates a mailbox in Web Messaging, it is created on the mail server.

In addition to the messaging capabilities, Web Messaging offers the following:

128 bit Secure Sockets Layer. Web Messaging uses 128 bit SSL when making connections to the IMail Server, thus giving you confidence that your transmissions will remain secure. For more information on Web Messaging security, see "Web Messaging Security".

Remote administration for IMail Server. Web Messaging offers an extended menu from which administrators can remotely monitor and manage the mail server, user accounts, aliases, mailing lists, and delivery rules. The menu choices for administration tasks only appear if the user has the required permissions. For information on the administration functions, see "Using Remote Administration Functions".

Spell Checking Feature. Web Messaging has a spell checker, that enables users to check for misspelled words before sending mail. The spell check comes equipped with two different dictionaries to choose from, as well as a user dictionary that is editable to meet the user's spelling needs.

Customizable interface. You can create your own look and feel for the Web Messaging interface by editing the HTML templates and other files used to generate the Web Messaging pages. If you have multiple mail hosts, each mail host can have a different Web Messaging interface. For information on customizing the interface, see "Appendix G. Changing the Look and Feel of Web Messaging".

Online ads. Web Messaging also supports the display of advertisements on all Web Messaging pages. This feature is very useful to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and other mail service providers who would like to sell online advertising space on their mail server. This feature can also be used to display announcements on an intranet. For more information about online ads, see "Displaying Online Advertisements".
