Advanced Options
Note: The default settings for the Advanced tab are appropriate for most systems. If you change these settings, be aware that they can impact server performance.

The Advanced tab lets you to control the underlying functionality of the SMTP server. The default settings on this tab should be appropriate for most installations. However, if you need to change these settings, be aware that they can change the operation of the server.

Maximum recipients per message. Sets the maximum number of addresses that can receive a single message. The default setting for this option is 0.

Delay between recipients. Sets a delay (in milliseconds), between message recipients, for relayed external mail. This prevents spammers from consuming all of the CPU time. However, the setting slows mail server performance.

Port. Enter the port that the SMTP service listens on. The default port number is 25.

Min Threads. Enter the minimum number of worker threads that the SMTPD thread pool makes available for client requests. Adjust the setting based upon the server capabilities and the processing demands on your server. For example, a powerful server that is normally busy might use a setting greater than 2, whereas a low end server that is not too busy might use a setting of 2.

Max Threads. Enter the maximum number of worker threads that the SMTPD thread pool makes available for client requests. Adjust the setting based upon the server capabilities and the processing demands on your server. For example, a powerful server that is normally busy might use a setting greater than 10, whereas a low end server that is not too busy might use a setting of 10.

Mailbox delimiter. Enter the character that is used to delimit the mailbox name in a user ID. If nothing is entered, the default delimiter is - (dash).
Note: Before changing the mailbox delimiter, check for existing usernames and aliases that contain the new delimiter character. If they contain the new delimiter character, their incoming mail will be undeliverable or delivered to another user whose username matches the portion of the address preceding the new delimiter.

Host delimiters. To change the default characters, enter the character(s) to use to delimit a host name. Each character is seen as equivalent to the @ in email addresses. By default the characters used are: @ % * : $ and &. Any of the defaults can be used between the user ID and the virtual host name in the POP3 or IMAP4 login user ID.
Note: IMail Web Messaging requires the @ character for the host delimiter.

Delivery Application. To replace the mail delivery application with an external program, enter the full pathname of the file in this text box.

Hello Message. To change the SMTP service welcome message, enter the new message in this text box. If the over 400 characters are entered, the default message is used. To revert to the default message, delete the custom message text from the Hello Message box.

Disable SMTP "AUTH". SMTP AUTH provides a means of authenticating the user ID and password of a user sending mail. This is handled transparently by the mail server and client. When the mail client connects to the mail server, the server tells the client the authorization methods it can use. The client then sends the user ID and password to the server, and the server verifies it. If a user issues the AUTH command when Disable SMTP "AUTH" is selected, SMTPD responds with the "502 command not implemented."

Enable SMTP To Listen On All IPs. New IMail installations only listen on IP addresses and ports configured in the IAdmin Administrator console. Select to enable this option if you want to have IMail server listen on all available IP addresses and configured ports on the server.
Important: If you have upgraded IMail server from a previous version, this option is selected by default and the server listens on all IP addresses for port 25 as it did in prior IMail versions. Clear this option if you only want the server to listen on IP addresses and ports configured in the IAdmin Administrator console.
Note: When an IPed host is deleted and the IMail server is configured to listen only on configured IP addresses (for example, the Enable SMTP To Listen On All IPs is cleared (not selected), after you delete the IPed host, you need to stop and restart the SMTPD32 service from the SMTP tab.
