Changing Service Welcome Message for SMTP, POP3, and IMAP4
When logging on to SMTP, POP3, or IMAP, the service returns a "welcome message" that identifies the mail server version, vendor, and operating system. You can change the service message to hide the mail server version and vendor information. To do so:
- Locate the following key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/System/CurrentControlSet/Services/- Under this key, add:
ServerKey/Parameters/HelloMsg/where ServerKey = SMTPD32 or POP3D32 or IMAP4D32
HelloMsg = the text of the service welcome message. This must be 400 characters or less. If over 400 characters, the default message is used. For POP3, if APOP is enabled, if the message plus the timestamp exceed 400 characters, the message will be truncated.
