LEXINGTON, MA - September 08, 2004
Ipswitch, Inc., the world’s leading provider of file transfer protocol (FTP) solutions, today announced an upgrade program designed to help government departments and workers currently using Ipswitch WS_FTP® Limited Edition (LE) transition to the new Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional. Ipswitch has withdrawn WS_FTP LE and the rights to distribute it from the government market. The new product provides greatly enhanced security, workflow, administrative control features and greater ease-of-use over those found in WS_FTP LE.

Ipswitch is the market-leading provider of FTP technology to government, supporting a wide spectrum of departments, including the US Navy, the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Federal Reserve Bank. More than 40 million users rely on Ipswitch WS_FTP. The company’s file transfer solutions enable individual users, departments or entire agencies to securely and quickly move large computer files, such as batches of documents, data bases, videos and images, between local and remote systems and across the Internet. FTP technology offers a number of advantages over sending files as e-mail attachments, including the ability to encrypt sensitive files, to integrate file transfer into workflow processes to notify recipients when new files arrive and to control transfer speed to optimize network resources.

WS_FTP LE, the most popular FTP client in government, was an integral part of many standard distributions of computing technology. Ipswitch had licensed it at no charge to government users, and departments and select agencies were granted redistribution licenses that permitted further deployment. Ipswitch has recently withdrawn WS_FTP LE in favor of an updated, fully supported and enhanced set of file transfer offerings. Government IT administrators and end users can now take advantage of attractive pricing to upgrade to the latest FTP technology.

“Ipswitch FTP products are the most common FTP technology in use today inside the government,” said Shawn McCarthy, program manager, U.S. IT Opportunity: Government and Education at IDC. “The free WS_FTP LE version historically has been very popular, but the need for increased security -- including secure connectivity, encryption for greater file security, and key matching technology -- is now driving government users in a new direction. The latest WS_FTP Pro version provides a level of security and functionality that is not available in the free FTP product. Ongoing security concerns on government networks should push IT managers toward more secure file transfers and Ipswitch is helping government offices establish an upgrade path to meet these new demands.”

Tighter Security, More Customization Options with Ipswitch WS_FTP Professional
A host of improvements to WS_FTP Professional make it easier to use than WS_FTP LE, and each user can customize the interface as desired. New security features include 128-bit encryption and greater control over security applied to individual files. Ipswitch has retained the two-pane send/receive user interface, a standard in FTP technology that the company invented, and improved upon it in WS_FTP Professional. Users migrating from WS_FTP LE will require little or no retraining to use WS_FTP Professional’s totally updated and modernized user interface.

Enhanced Administrative Control with Ipswitch WS_FTP Server
WS_FTP Professional combined with WS_FTP Server 5.01 provides IT administrators with greater control over file transfers and allows them to integrate file transfer into their workflow processes through the new Ipswitch Notification Server. The Ipswitch Notification Server can be configured to alert users via e-mail or pager or through integration with other applications the instant a file is created, deleted, downloaded, uploaded, renamed, when a user failed to log in or when allowable disk space was exceeded. Administrators can also control end users’ file transfer activities and allocate bandwidth among individuals.

The Ipswitch WS_FTP Server/Professional solution offers dramatically enhanced functionality over WS_FTP LE. Ipswitch designed WS_FTP LE for earlier versions of Microsoft Windows and will not support it on newer operating systems, such as Windows® XP® and later versions of Windows 2000.

Alex Neihaus, vice president of marketing, Ipswitch, Inc., said, “Government agencies and offices have long relied on FTP software to help them meet demanding requirements for information security and efficient use of their networks. The new WS_FTP Professional and WS_FTP Server from Ipswitch provide markedly enhanced capabilities to better integrate with workflow schemes, apply tighter security and enhance overall usability. We believe that these qualities will be as attractive to those working in the public sector as they’ve been to enterprises, small and mid-sized businesses, and educational institutions.”
