Chapter 3: Setting Up Notifications

When an event occurs on your network, WhatsUp Gold performs several different actions. WhatsUp Gold:

• Records the event in the Event Log (described in "Logging and Reporting Events").
• Updates the device properties Status and Log dialog boxes
• Changes the appearance of the device icon on a map (as described in "Reading the Network Map").
• Optionally, sends a notification (as described in this chapter).

WhatsUp Gold can send a notification in several ways; it can:

• Sound an alarm
• Activate a beeper
• Execute a Program
• Send a message to a pager
• Send an SMTP Mail message
• Send a pre-recorded message to a telephone (only in Windows 95, 98, and only if you have a voice modem installed).
• Display a WinPopup on a Windows NT system
• Send a group of notifications that includes any of the above types

You can also set up a "recurring notification" to use a beeper, pager, or
SMTP mail message to send a network status report at a specified time interval. See "Sending Recurring Notifications".

Setting up notifications involves two steps:

1. You first need to define the notifications that you want to use, such as activating a network administrator's beeper or sending e-mail to an individual. This section describes how
   to do this.
2. Then, you assign a notification to a particular device, selected devices, or all devices.
